Abstract

Composites reinforced by natural fibers have now been widely developed to be used as an alternative to synthetic composites. One of the natural potentials that has not been widely used as a reinforcement of composite materials is the rayung fiber of gelagah grass. Before being used as an alternative material, research must be carried out first on mechanical properties to determine its feasibility. Impact toughness and tensile strength are mechanical properties that are important parameters of composites that are strongly influenced by the binding force between the fibers and the matrix. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact strength, tensile strength and density of the gelagah grass rayung fiber composite (saccharum spontaneum) with a matrix of unsaturated polyester resin (UPR). In this study, the rayung fiber of gelagah grass (saccharum spontaneum) was arranged in the same direction with a length of ±18cm then a 5% NaOH alkaline treatment was carried out with a soaking time of 60 minutes and made using the hand lay-up method. The composition of the composite constituent fibers in this study is divided into 3, namely 8% Fiber (KI), 10% Fiber (KII) and 12% Fiber (KIII) obtained from the calculation of the volume of composite molds. The size of the impact test object is made based on ISO 179-1 standard, tensile test based on ASTM D638 standard and density test based on JIS A5908. The highest impact and tensile test results were found in KIII of 0.010616 J/mm2 and 16.72 MPa, while the lowest was found in KI of 0.00746 J/mm2 and 14.89 MPa. The highest density test results were found in KI of 1.1457 g/cm3 and the lowest density value was found in KIII of 1.1390 g/cm3.
